The Indiana Forest Industry Council (IFIC) Mission

  • To encourage and promote the exchange of ideas and information among individuals, partnerships, corporations and others doing business in the state of Indiana who are engaged in timber buying or the primary or secondary wood-using industries.
  • To facilitate the resolution of problems associated with the growing and harvesting of Indiana's forest resources.
  • To educate those engaged in the forest industry.
  • To be a trade association of the Indiana forest industry.

What is the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® Program?

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI®) program is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives and performance measures developed by foresters, conservationists and scientists, that combines the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality. There are currently over 136 million acres of forestland in North America enrolled in the SFI program, making it the world’s largest sustainable forestry program.

The SFI program is now fully independent. On January 1, 2007, a new independent organization, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc. (SFI, created to direct all elements of the SFI program.  This independence solidifies the SFI progfram's strong market position as one of the world's leasing forest certification programs.  For more information, go to www.aboutsfi.org.

Who Developed the SFI Program?

Professional foresters, conservationists, scientists, landowners and other stakeholders developed the SFI program. These men and women were inspired by the concept of sustainability that evolved from the 1987 report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, and was subsequently adopted by the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Benefits of the SFI Program:
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative program is based on the premise that responsible environmental practices and sound business practices can benefit all stakeholders. In short, the SFI program provides a means for foresters, landowners, loggers, and wood and paper producers to satisfy the growing demand of the American people for environmentally sound forestry while still producing—at an affordable price—the forest products upon which people have come to rely.
